Neeraj Chopra is in list of nominees for World Athlete of the Year 2023 award:
Eleven athletes have been nominated for the World Athlete Of The Year 2023 Award. This is a happy moment for the Indian as Naraj Chopra is also in the race for the World Athlete Of The Year 2023 Award. Other nominees are steeplechaser Soufiane El Bakkali, Sprinter Noah Lyles, and racewalker Alvaro Martin are also in the fray.
Winner of the Gold in the Tokyo Olympics under the athlete category javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the above-mentioned award by the World Athletics on Thursday.
At the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal and created history as he became the first Indian to achieve this. He has been in second position in the Diamond League 2023. In the recently concluded Asian Games, he defended his title in Hangzhou, China.
Neeraj Chopra, known for setting several records for India, will face stiff competition from the other ten athletes shortlisted for the Male World Athlete of the Year 2023 title. The global leader in the 200 m event and reigning 100 m and 200 m champion is American sprinter Noah Lyles. He also won a gold medal for the United States in the men’s 4×100 meters relay at Budapest 2023.
The only competitor to remain undefeated in six finals is Morocco’s Sufyan El Bakkali, who specializes in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Earlier this year, the Olympic champion successfully defended her global championship.
The finalists for Male World Athlete of the Year 2023 were selected by a global panel of athletics experts that included representatives from each of the world’s six continents.
Spain’s racewalker Alvaro Martín, who has won global championships in both the 20 and 35-kilometer events, and Sweden’s pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, who currently leads the world. Two are also nominated for 2023 World Athlete of the Year.
World Athletics will reveal the results of a three-way voting process on 13 or 14 November, which will select the final five competitors. Email votes will be exchanged between the World Athletics Council and the World Athletics family. In the interim, fans will be able to cast votes online on World Athletics social media platforms.
The cutoff date for World Athlete of the Year voting is October 28. The World Athletics Council family vote and the public count will account for half of the results.
The votes of the World Athletics family and the general public will account for 25% of the final result, with the World Athletics Council votes accounting for 50% of the total. The winners will be made public on World Athletics’ social media accounts on 11 December.
